Renault R5 Turbo tach signal source...

Post by Haudi »

Hey all. Been a loooong time since I've posted here (I liked the Yahoo mailing list better I guess). Anyways, I'm putting a v2.2 board on a Renault R5 Turbo (2) and I was looking to see if there is anybody out there who knows anything about this engine's systems.

When it was imported the to US the importer installed an archaic AirSystems Inc. fuel injection system on it, and the ECU died last week. I am using as much of the currect harness as possible to simplify things, and the only thing I'm having trouble with is a clean tach signal. The coil negative is too dirty (700rpm spikes while cranking), and I can't seem to get a signal from the sensor of unknown type in the distributor. The AirSystems ECU had an inductive pickup installed arround the #1 spark plug wire as it's pickup, which I woud like to get rid of, but am open to using as a last resort. Any type of aftermarket crank trigger is out of the question, as installing it would require removing the engine.

Details on the MS:
v2.2 board, running DT 1.02 code and MT 2.25

Got it running!

I ended up realising that the starter was drawing waaay too much juice and replaced it which fixed my tach signal issues during cranking. Runs great with no spikes right off the coil ground, I did add a 55k ohm resistor between the coil and the MS as the old AirSystemsInc EFI had a 82k ohm which I accidently broke with a slip of a screwdriver and the 55k was the closest replacement I had.

#6 running in the books, now to tackle the next MS project.... a secondary EFI system for a soon-to-be-supercharged Porsche Boxter.
