the car is a 1991 vw Jetta, with a 2.0l 16v engine. It has a distributor with a 4 window wheel. To set the base ignition timing, I got the car running, set the trigger angle in megatune to 60deg, with no additions, and my fixed angle to 6 deg. There is a mark on the flywheel at tdc, and 6 deg btdc. I only have a standard timing light, no advance adjustment, so I used that and rotated the distr. until the 6deg mark on the flywheel lined up with the notch in the housing. After that, it ran pretty well, and after switching to my ignition map it revved nicely. can anyone confirm if my procedure was correct?
thanks
Did I set up my distributor and spark settings correctly?

Your procedure sounds fine. As long as the strobed timing matches the reported timing in Megatune you should be working.

You probably used an advance timing light set to 10 degrees. I didn't have an advance light, and since I've never used a timing light before I wanted to verify if what I did was correct. It is my understanding if you have an advance timing light, you can use just about any degree you want, 10 15, 30 even, just match the degree on the gun to the fixed angle in MT, then play with the trigger angle/rotate the distr. until you get a good idle. 10 deg. is just a nice even number that basically all engines can idle at.Cdn20valve wrote:I think your supposed ot have fixed angle at 10 degrees. and use the 0 mark on the flywheel as that is top dead center. That is what I did and the car runs fine.
