EDIS 8 Problems

Post by hytekauto »

The setup:

MS 2/3 with V2.36 controlling a dual throttle body Dodge 426 Hemi. Currently running an HEI 8 module, coil, with stock Chrysler mag pickup.
Runs reasonably well, less some hot low speed ign dropouts. I believe that this is due to low output of the mag sensor as it gets hot. Anything above low idle, this doesn't happen.

The problem:

I wanted to go to the EDIS ignition system, and have a custom built EDIS wheel (Escort) adapter that bolts on the inside of the crank pulley using the 6 bolts normally holding the crank pulley. The adapter allows rotation to adjust radially the proper sequencing of the missing tooth. The pickup is mounted on a custom, rigid, gap adjustable arm. The new pickup is the matching one for the wheel from an Escort, as is the wheel. I have two identical EDIS 8 modules (F4SF-12K072-AA). All the wiring done per the EDIS manual, including the approriate mods to the opto input for this type of ignition triggering. When attempting to start the engine, the EDIS module outputs via PIP (pin 1) 5-8 times, then stops (I can see the triggers on MS). This is consistent with both modules. Continuing cranking generates no more PIP pulses. Starting the start sequence again generates the 5-8 pulses, then nothing. Putting a scope on it clearly shows the nice square PIP pulses for 5-8 times, then flatline as cranking continues. This is true even when the PIP line is disconnected from MS. The scope does show that the output of the mag pickup is a nice consistent AC waveform throughout the cranking sequence. I checked for spark output on 2 of the coil paks (2 chrysler 2.4L; same resistance values as the Ford coil paks), there was none.
Anybody seen this behavior? What's the fix?

Ford has a better Idea........

Post by hytekauto »

Well, I finally got the EDIS system to work on my Hemi. Seems that I had a Ford pigtail from the appropriate trigger wheel sensor with blue and grey wires. I also have an EDIS8 module with corresponding pigtail with blue and grey wires. Logic has that you'd connect blue > blue and grey > grey......wrong! By reading some other posts on EDIS, I discovered that some others had run into this wire color problem. The fix: reverse the trigger leads ( blue to grey, grey to blue) and works as advertised. The Hemi now has no distributor, and the timing is rock solid throughout the RPM range. I'm sold. Great system. It even idles better. I'll post pics when I take them. Thanks!
