Fuel Pump Location
Caqn anyone advise me on fuel pump location. I just replaced mione after a failure and the new one seems to be making unhappy noises now. I have a remote mounted pump under the hood in a cool spot behind the headlights. It is fed by the OE pipe from the tank. Is this OK or must it be below the level of the fuel in the tank.

FI pumps really are not good at pulling vacuum to get their fuel supply. If you have your pump in the front of the car and the fuel tank is in the back, especially if the pump is higher than the tank, this is likely your issue.
Injection pumps are happiest when they are close to and below the fuel supply, although many folks put them level with the fuel too. Moving it far away and above is likely the reason the pump is not happy.

Thanks Jack, you confirmed what I already suspected. It just does not seem happy pulling fuel up hill. This makes things complicated as the tank is pretty much the lowest point on my car so mounting the pump at the back and below the tank will be an interesting challenge. Still, if I wanted it easy I would have bought a new car with injection!

What pump are you using?
I had what I regarded as a built-to-last Bosch pump fail at the weekend. It was mounted in a stock location beside and below the tank that I have transplanted into my car. It was a standard Ford Sierra/Granada efi type pump. 0 580 464 040 if I remember correctly.
Sort of on-topic I also found this:

although I'd really like a good list of Bosch pumps and their capabilities as well as a simple x-ref.

I am using a sytec 604 http://www.fuelsystem.co.uk/new_page_8.htm
but I do have a Facet red top on the shelf so I will try your advice and use it to feed the HP pump. Sound logical to me as it will just make the HP pump think it has a good head of fuel feeding it. Car is away having an exhaust made at the moment but I will let you know how I get on.
I will look at the granada pump if the current one is damaged, probably cheaper too.

It appears that the Sierra/Granada style pumps are good for 450hp at standard 3bar pressure for reference.
A load of rusty sludge fell out of mine when I removed it, that may have cured the sieze, but I've not yet tried to run it since. (Will do very shortly)

James,
Based on those numbers I think the I will be shopping around for a granda pump tomorrow. That will take all the worries away about if it's man enough for the job. Nice Cortina BTW! www.magnum.fx4.com for some more "british steel".
