5 cylinder and VVT
Hi,
very new here, a whole lot of plans, and doing some homework before ordering/building a MS3.
I want to use a MS3/MS3x combo on a 5 cylinder volvo engine. From the docs, I found that using the standard 60+2 wheel together with a "half moon" cam wheel should do the job.
But... I have a engine witch has 2 continuous variable camshafts. And I really would like to use them (for MPG reasons).
Q: how do I handle/generate the campulse when using 2cvvt on my volvo B5254T (2007) engine ?

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
What sensors on the engine report the positions of the two cams? That feedback is required for VVT to work.

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
Both cams have a VR sensor. I wasn't entirely clear; I know from the documentation that the 60-2 crankwheel and a "half moon" camwheel should work on a standard non VVT 5 cilinder engine.
This engine uses a more complicated wheel on both cams. There is a detailed description available but that's copyrighted by volvo, so I post a summary.
This is the used patern:
But how "compatible" is this wheel with the fuelinjection and ignition part ?

This is the used patern:
Code: Select all
A: Engine speed (RPM) sensor signal.
B: Camshaft position (CMP) sensor signal. From high to low signal when the teeth on the camshaft pulley leave the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
C: Low engine speed (RPM) sensor signal because of the holes in the flywheel/carrier plate.
D: Top dead center (TDC) cylinder 1, 0°CA (84°CA after hole "C" in the flywheel/carrier plate).
1: Detection of flank 1, reference position 47°CA "D1".
2: Detection of flank 2, reference position 227°CA "D2".
3: Detection of flank 3, reference position 407°CA "D3".
4: Detection of flank 4, reference position 587°CA "D4".
But how "compatible" is this wheel with the fuelinjection and ignition part ?

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
That should work with the existing MS3 pre1.1 alpha code.
Use "poll level" and then set the correct number of cam teeth. You'll need to choose the correct cam edge - this will likely be "rising edge" at the CPU (matches the falling edge on the cam.)

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
Ah, thanks.
Will this also take care of the moving phase the ignition sees when the cam timing is changed ?
Sorry, English is not my native language. Wanna try Dutch ?

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
The ignition uses the crank as the primary reference, so that won't be a problem.

Re: 5 cylinder and VVT
Is this B5254T still alive? Im bulding ST focus 2006 engine to Ford sierra. Im having a same project to come. If someone has a working program for that engine could someone send it to me? Sure my dyno service have to see all again but it would help him a lot if i would get those cam timing setups right.
I would also would need a tips to connect and setup that iacv / idle stepper motor right. Its from Mitsubishi evo 8/9.
Im noobie of these things, im trying to help my tuner. He have done lots of cars but non of those has been with 4 teeth and "halfmoon" trigger wheels. Also he has use only regular solenoid idle valves.
Is it possible someone to send me Mitsubishi evo 8/9 setups to see how it shoud be mapped and ST focus or same engine Volvo setups?
