Nissan 360 CAS - Patrol TB45e

Post by scottmeister »

Hi all,

I am looking to install a Megasquirt 3 w/ MS3X on a 1998 Nissan Patrol with a turbo TB45e engine (Australia). From my research thus far, it seems that Nissan during this era used many parts similarly between the TB and the RB engine series, especially the RB25.

Pictured below is the distributor optical timing wheel the TB45e utilises.

Image

The trigger wheel utilises 360 outer slits, and 6 inner slits. Five of these inner slits are the same length and width, and one slit is much wider (square shaped), as you can see at the top. I think I have seen a RB25 trigger wheel (although not sure if it was Hitachi or Mitsu), and the 6 inner slits it had were of progressively thicker width.

What I'm wanting to know is, if I install a MS3 with 1.1.2 firmware as per the instructions for the RB25 with pullup resistors (and set the software to suit in RB25 mode), will the decoder be likely work with this trigger pattern? Or will it need some code massaging!?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers, Scott

Hi all,

Having trouble with getting rpm sync.

Please have a look at the attached composite log file. The MS seems to pick up the crank and cam signals, I have a feeling that the RB25 trigger is not similar (found a photo of an RB25 which had 6 different sized large slits), and thus will not work.

Any ideas on how I can get this trigger pattern to work?

Help much appreciated, Cheers.

That will require a new decoder to be added. It can be done, but will take a while.

Thanks for the reply James.

How long is a while? In the meantime, can I run the MS3 off the low resolution trigger signal using batch fire?

I thought MS3 was already supporting the OEM Nissan discs...

If you have a distributor, then you should be able to use the inner slots to do a basic trigger, just don't expect very stable timing.

It is, just not that particular OEM Nissan disc. They come in a couple different varieties.

The inner slits should be fine for distributor / batch fire mode. People have been running that way on MS1 and MS2 for a long time.

Alternatively, we have drop in shutter wheels with more MegaSquirt friendly patterns available. There's a 50 mm and a 54 mm one; you'll have to measure to see which one you need.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have attached a PDF extract from a Haltech manual regarding Nissan Optical triggers which may be useful to all.

Perhaps in future, TunerStudio trigger selection can reference different types of Nissan Trigger wheels; i.e. Type 1, 2 or 3.

I have a 50mm DIY wheel in the mail, which should hopefully do the trick in the meantime; however it would be good to utilise the factory wheel in the future. Not keen on using the factory wheel inner slits only, want to run sequential injection anyway.

Thanks for the info. That confirms the five types of Nissan disc (plus Optispark.) The two missing ones can be supported for a future release, but adding them is not a five minute job.

Hi James,

Any idea if we might see support for the earlier 360 deg trigger wheels like these in firmware version 1.3?

Are you in a position where you could test code quickly if I am able to write it?

James,
I have a wheel from a Nissan 300ZX that appears to be the same (360 outer, 5 narrow inner, and 1 wide inner slits). I am using the DIYAutotune trigger wheel : http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/54-m ... p-497.html and can easily swap wheels.

I'm running MS3 w/ MS3X and have the cam trigger wired into the MS3X Cam Trigger input.

The engine has a running and driving tune on it, but it is not nearly optimized.

What kind of testing would need to be done? I can provide trigger or msl logs of cranking and no load revs.

Let me know if I can help.

Sam

Hi James

Sorry I missed your post - like Sam above I can easily change the trigger wheel back to the 360 and test as required.
