MS1 Noobie - vw KR 1.8 16v T - Struggling to start
Dear All,
I was wondering if anyone here could help? I've inherited a VW mk2 Golf gti running an MS1 with a turbo. It was always running and overfuelling constantly on idle. Ran up the road 200 yards max.
My problem is, that it ran in a fashion, until I added a decompression plate, and reduced it to a 8.0 - 1 compression. Now it won't run (well it runs for a few seconds, but dies). The car had a blown head gasket and a newly skimmed head and decompression plate is fitted. It also had a problem in that it was only running on 2 injectors, but I've since fixed that, as one of the FET's had died.
I have compression, spark and fuel.... I have also installed new starter motor, battery, coil pack, plugs, leads, rotor arm, cam belt and 1/2 tank of new fuel. Knock sensor installed ready to be used. I believe my timing is correct, but I'm really doubting that I've got the MS1 set up completely wrong!!
Please can someone help me? Thanks in advance
I doubt my MSQ will make any sense to anyone, as it's not set up yet!
As for a bit of info...
I'm running a standard 1.8 16v KR engine, with a Garret T3 turbo, 30lb Injectors, FMIC off a truck, LC-1 Wideband o2 and a shed load of fingers crossed!!!

OK, so it did run on the MSQ? So cannot be too far off, how about posting a log of whatever it will do, idling, cranking etc..

Yes, post up a log of whatever it does, attempted start, and the tune file on the controller when the log was captured. I'd also do a compression check on the current engine configuration to see what the decompression plate has provided.

Re: MS1 Noobie - vw KR 1.8 16v T - Struggling to start
Here you go! Just tried to start it up and to my surprise it's looking better!
Iv'e just checked and rechecked all my timing and to be fair I've just checked the compression again (as pointed out, to assume is to be wrong!!). The compression is 7.5 -1 across all 4 cylinders. Just to confirm it did run on the Megasquirt before, but very badly, as it was always over fuelling. But alas the head gasket was goosed anyway.
As you can see from my log, it starts up and runs for a couple of seconds (something that I haven't seen for a couple of days), and then dies. I've no doubt one of you clever bods will pin point the problem and point me in the right direction, far quicker than I've been trying!
Thank you all for your help and input, it's much appreciated.

The WUE looks pretty minimal, have you tried increasing that?

Go under "Crank/Warmup", "After Start Enrichment Settings" and look for "Map Mode During ASE". Change that to "Normal MAP", log a start and post up your results.

Dear All,
I have since upped the WUE and now it runs, but badly!!
I've noticed that is missing now and again, and my spark advance is around 77*. Naturally I have got something completely wrong. Please can anyone advise.
Thanks.

Where is that?wantsomefun wrote:my spark advance is around 77*
The datalog shows normal spark advance of around 17 degrees while it is running around 1100 rpm.

Seems to be a lot of noise in your wideband AFR, what equipment are you running?

Re: MS1 Noobie - vw KR 1.8 16v T - Struggling to start
Hi there,
I'm running an Innovative LC-1 wind band controller and sensor, I have noticed that it misfires a few times and as far as I can make out it's had a few resets.
I think it might be caused by what I've done to get it running. I've attached a pic of the tunerstudio running a spark angle of 77*
No doubt this is where I've got it drastically wrong? Whoops!!!
Just to let you all know, I'm very grateful for all the help you've given me. Big smiles, Thank you all.

Seeing that looks like a Skull dash and there isn't one of those packaged for MS1e, I'm betting you imported an MS2 dash and it is assigned to the wrong OutputChannel.
You should be able to fix it by right clicking on the gauge and selecting:
Gauge Template 2 --> Spark Advance - advanceGauge
I'll include an MS1 version of that dash in the next release.

Re: MS1 Noobie - vw KR 1.8 16v T - Struggling to start
Well.....
Here's one for you all! Unfortunately as I've been struggling with this engine, it now appears although I've changed the driver for injectors 1 & 2, and there is a pulse to the injector, alas it's not opening the injectors!!
The compression has been checked again, and all is sweet around 8.5 - 1.
attached is a couple of pics of the outputs from the injectors, as you can see although all are working, there is not much of a spike from the No's. 1 & 2 injectors. Have swapped the injectors around, to confirm all 4 injectors are perfect, also swapped the wiring loom around from No's 2 & 3 to prove that the fault is probably in the ECU.
I've obviously got something wrong, although the car does run quite well on just 3 & 4 injectors with 1 & 2 disconnected!!! It's looking promising to say the least.
I'm sorry to be a pain, but can someone help me??
I've also attached the MSQ to get it running, and the log for the car idling on two cylinders.
Thanks Danny.
