Hi All,
Looking through the forum and I'm a little confused about my best approach...
MS may not be the way for my requirements, please advise or bounce me off to a different forum.
I need an ignition only solution that can offer;
Vacuum dependant adv/retard.
Custom adv/retard map.
Driving a 4 cylinder engine - ideally via a 4 coil pack but wasted spark could be used if its loads cheaper.
The big problem is what to drive it from. I dont have a toothed gear and would prefer not to fit one.
The engine has a distributor with a hall effect that mimicks a points setup (IE the hall effect fires 4 times per Cam rev)
There is currently no way of knowing which cylinder is firing when the hall effect is triggered.
I would like to scrap the distributor and instead pick up a single signal from a sensor that the engine currently doesnt have. I no longer need the (cam driven) fuel pump. Could I add a sensor and trigger 'pin' to the old fuel pump drive lobe?
Is the Microsquirt overkill for this sort of application? anything cheaper I should be considering?
Whats the best kind of trigger if I dont want to fit a toothed gear to the cam shaft? (definately don't want to fit anything to crank shaft).
Would the MS support using the current four pulses and I just add another sensor (that fires once per cam rev) to indicate where in the cycle the engine currently is.
VW HZ 1043cc engine 1990.
Any thing abvous being missed here?
Thanks is advance - all advice gratefully received.
Keith

Re: Suitability
Not wanting to fit a crank trigger is certainly making your choice a bit more difficult. However, yes you could use the distributor signal and an additional single tooth per distributor revolution. This would be a "Dual wheel" configuration with 4 teeth.keith wrote:Is the Microsquirt overkill for this sort of application? anything cheaper I should be considering?

Take a look through the Microsquirt Hardware manual for some wiring examples and ignition coil examples that may be of interest for this setup.

Re: Suitability
I am not sure if I completely understand but have you considered fitting an AEM EPM to your current distrib. to give you crank and cam signal?keith wrote:The big problem is what to drive it from. I dont have a toothed gear and would prefer not to fit one.

Re: Suitability
Personally, I'd look closely at fitting a crank sensor. That gives a much more accurately timed trigger. No chains to stretch or gears to chatter. The chances are someone has already done this mod to your engine model so can help with how to. If it is a common engine it may well be you can buy a kit.
You could then use wasted spark with no other trigger.

Re: Suitability
Even if you don't go to a true crank wheel, consider making/buying a dizzy wheel with more resolution, like a 12-1/12-1 (24 total tooth positions, missing one every 180 deg on wheel).
