Which product for Subaru EZ36Ds?

Post by gbeaty »

I'm looking for a standalone for an EZ36D (3.6L flat 6). I've been told microsquirts can run it without AVCS (Subaru's variable cam timing system), but would prefer to keep this functionality. The EZ36D has AVCS on all four cams, controlled by four different solenoids. It also has an electronic throttle (though I'll be use a cable) and two knock sensors. Its coil-on plug and has batch fire injection. I'd prefer to stay away from wasted spark if possible, though keeping batch fire matters less to me.

This is the crank wheel; it has a total of 30 teeth: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7tPb ... 1dTVDRxVlE I guess its a 36 - 6? I'm fairly sure its a mag sensor as it has two wires going to it.

Each cam has an angle sensor using a solid wheel with three inverted "teeth". I'm fairly sure they're hall-effect sensors as each has three wires going to it.

I have an existing OBD2 dash I'd like to use, if its possible for MSs to spit out OBD2 data.

Thanks for any help.

You would need an MS3 for the variable valve timing. Do you have any information on the cam trigger patterns? The crank sensor itself is called a 36-2-2-2 in the documentation.

Could the MS3, or any MS variant, do closed-loop VVT? Edit: Looks like yup, it can.

Each tooth is equidistant from the others, so 120 degrees apart. If you're asking about their position in relation to the crank wheel, the 1st bank's intake cam tooth is lined up with the sensor when the "top" crank tooth (the one surrounded by gaps) is as well.

If you want AVCS then you will need MX3x or MSPRO.

Tunerstudio has the trigger wheel already setup as "subaru 36-2-2-2 VVT". Just make sure to set "6" cylinders in setup.

EDIT: to my knowledge MS doesn't do OBD. Go buy a CAN BUS gauge cluster.

Wow, I'm planning a MS3Pro install for the same engine! Matt, I will be interested to hear is MS supports the cam trigger as well as the crank.

What advantages does the MS3Pro have over the MS3x in this application?

Thats a shame. It'd be nice to be able to use an $80 Ultragauge as a gauge cluster. They work well in direct sunlight, unlike many tablets and phones.

For me, I chose the MS3Pro in this application because of the following:

1. Its fully assembled in a weather proof case, and its small.
2. More efficient power regulation (runs cooler with no heat syncs needed).
3. It already has many items you would want to upgrade on the MS3/3X.
* Real time clock
* Better crank & cam pickup circuitry
(don't have to mess with pots to get a clean signal)
* Built in 2 channel knock control

We will have to keep each other informed on any progress since we have similar setups!

3 teeth equally spaced for the VVT sensors? That's supported in current firmware.

Thanks for the help jsiedlicki. I decided to go with the MS3x. I'll definitely keep you informed on my progress, probably on this thread. As MS3 projects seem to be made up of text files of various formats, I was thinking of keeping my progress on github. That way others would be able to access or contribute to it easily.

You can't go wrong either way. It will be nice to track your progress here. I have obtained the stock ECU map for the EZ36D engine if you are interested I can send it to you. I am using it to pull ignition tables, AFR tables, MAF curves and injector setting so I do not have to start my Megasquirt tune from scratch.

PM sent.

Are some years MAP while others are MAF? My EZ36D has what appears to be a denso MAP sensor on the back of the intake manifold.

All are MAF but use a MAP sensor for other load calculations (timing mostly I think).

Hi, has there been any progress on this project? I want to use a ez30r but have not moved forward until the avcs and avls has been worked out.
