4.0 head to 4.2 Jeep CJ7 - Yes or No for Megasquirt

Post by joebronco »

After some time researching I've decided to swap out the head on my CJ7 -

The wiring was a complete disaster. The PO added all kinds of crap and spliced every wire at least once. It was so bad that the fuse box melted! I pulled EVERY WIRE in the jeep out and I'm going with a new wiring harness from EZ or Painless. I picked up a rebuilt head (1994) and the manifold off a 1996 with single fuel rail and all the wires (up to the firewall) for dirt cheap. So far ive put the new head and intake on, modified the power steering pump and plugged the holes in the head.

If I go with a standard setup, ill need the following to finish up.
Wire Harness
PCM (Computer)
OLDER style return fuel rail
MAF Sensor (?)
4.0 Water neck
HEI ignition
Fuel Pressure reg
V.S.S.
Crank damper sensor
- Crank position sensor
Fuel Pump

My question is: If I go with the Megasquirt will I eliminate the need for the PCM, MAF and the Crank damper sensor? The crank damper and PCM will cost me around $400
Anyone on the board done a CJ7 and can give me some pointers?

Yes, you can run an MS2 without any of the above items.
