BMW M62B44 MS2 wont start

Post by shazv8supercharged »

guys newbie here
really hoping someone here could help me out

heres some details about the car/engine/mods

1989 BMW E30 325ise
M62B44 4.4 V8 engine with 5 Speed box
Powerdyne BD11A Supercharger

right so im booked in for a remap with a guy called Steve in Norwich
its booked in for the 17th October

so today I thought id sort out all the oil leaks etc before it goes in for a remap
so we did the following

inlet manifold gaskets
PCV valve
new o rings
new 373cc bosch EV6E injectors
waterpump
quantum 340lph fuel pump

I also recently managed to get hold of a ecu which has MS2 already installed
this ECU is a direct plug & play for my engine
ECU numbers match etc

so anyway my problem is the following
the MS2 ECU wont start my car

now I don't have a clue what software/map the ecu has on it
im completely new to all this as I have never gone standalone

can anyone help?
anyone local to me (barking Essex) that could help me?

thanks in advance

any chance you can take a datalog of a failed start attempt and post a copy of the tune file that is on the ecu?

Or have you even attempted to communicate with the ECU yet? You don't want to just plug and in and assume, computers aren't smart, they just do math really fast. Get a laptop, download Tuner Studio from http://www.efianalytics.com, get a comm cable that works with your operating system drivers on your laptop and connect. Then you can make sure it even has power, look at sensor inputs to see if they make sense, watch for rpm while cranking and get that log that we need to help you.

Ok so guys here's a update

So found out why there was no communication with ecu to car or laptop
Basically when we opened up the ecu we found out that there was no power getting to the ecu
Found out that on the ecu side pin 27 was the ignition live and on my wiring side the ignition live was pin 26

So we swapped then pins over and we had power
So at this point we could now communicate with the ecu

Went to start
Cranks but doesn't fire up

Anyway I contacted Steve in norwich, booked my car in for remap and told him the problems I was having

On monday 17th October we went down to see Steve with my car
He dynod it first
After dyno we plugged in megasquirt ecu
Here tried for ages trying to get it started but still no joy
He opened up the ecu and said the wiring wasn't done properly
He mentioned the Firing order isn't right hence why it's not starting

So then we done a bit of research and contacted eddy in Colchester

Spoke to him and went to drop the ecu off to him
The next day he sent me this email

Hi Shaz,

Not great news, when I opened the case the Board is not one I recognoise and as most of the components are Surface Mounted and I am only familar with the Through Hole type, but saying that from what I can see it all looks pretty good and it does have 4 coil drivers and they look fine, so all I can suggest is you go through all your settings and the Firing order etc, sorry I can not be more help, OK

I will charge you just £20 for my time OK.

                                                                        Regards Eddie Walsh

So now I'm at this stage
Anyone here that can help???

Have you any history of the unit? I didn't know there was a PNP unit for the M62.

Not that I'm aware of either. It could have been something like a DIYBOB on a homemade harness. If you're not sure what ECU this is, post a picture.
