Outlaw Opel Omega STW, world's fastest megasquirted car ?

Post by paw »

Though I post this success story here as well...
Completely self-made CrMo tube chassis, interior, electrics, rearend housing, suspension (except brakes, shocks and springs). The list of self-made components goes on and on...

First ever test run on the quartermile was 8.5secs / 158MPH (255 Km/h), with a fuel map that was total guesswork ! No engine dyno, nothing before the first run. Only idling and a few hundred yards of under-2000rpm cruising. The only concern when making a guesswork- fuelmap was to avoid going lean. And lucky for us, we were at 10-11 A/F ratio the whole time.

Best time was 8.4secs, that was the fourth test run ever with the motor and EFI. Then we discovered why the car didn't run any better : The alternator only charged with 11.5 volts during the run, which meant that the fuel pressure went down and the MSD 7 didn't give a good spark. That's why on that 8.4sec run the engine only revved up to just over 6000RPM.

Anyway, this was only a test/tuneup session in preparation for the next season. When we get the alternator issues sorted out and the engine will rev higher, we are looking at low-to-mid 7sec runs.

EFI :
· Megasquirt v2.2 circuitboard, Extra 029y4 , fuel only. PT100 industrial temp sensor and 10Bar fuel pressure sensor fitted to Megasquirt. Serious vibration protection mods to the circuitboard. Innovate LC-1 Wideband
For the 2008 season : MS Ignition control, water/methanol injection, MS built-in standalone datalogger

Car:
· 1995 Opel Omega STW "MV8"

Engine:
· 4.6” bore Chevy Bowtie engine block
· 4” stroke Eagle forged crankshaft
· 6.385” Eagle H-Beam connecting rods
· Ross custom CR 8.5:1 pistons
· Mechanical roller cam, offset roller lifters, Jesel offset shaft rockers
· Pontiac Motorsport Severe Duty cylinder heads, 2.35” intake, 1.9” exhaust
· Edelbrock single plane intake manifold, disassembled/blocked/modded BG Demon carb as a throttle body
· 1600cc Injectors
· 2 3/8” / 4 ½” Headers
· MSD Pro Billet distributor, MSD 7AL-3, MSD Pro Coil, MSD Boost Retard
· Vortech V4-XX centrifugal supercharger, about 0.9Bar (13PSI) Boost on the 8.4sec run

Congratulations! Certainly the fastest Megasquirt drag time I'm aware of so far.

Looking good. I know Scott Clark was talking about Megasquirting a ProMod, but not sure how far he got. If by chance you ever take the car to the UK, please post here and I'll come say hello!

Hey James ! You never know if we end up in Santa Pod sometime... A guy from a nearby garage piloting a STTF bike first drove with his crew all the way from Finland to Santa Pod to check out the English rain, and went there again a bit later this year for the Finals only to have problems with his supercharged 4-valve twin cyl nitro engine... :(
Funnily enough, I might just end up working just about 30km east from Birmingham, starting this year or early next year. I guess I have to bring my -67 Camaro with me at some point to the UK as well.
The Outlaw Opel will stay in Finland though, it's been a project of my brother's and a few friends, I have been the EFI guy in the Opel project.

Added a "new" video from my archive dungeon. This was the first ever startup with the new engine and the Megasquirt in August 2007, just a few days before the season drag racing finals.

Possibly the fastest 1/4mile car, but not the fastest outright. I know for instance that years ago (like 5 ish) a turbo-busa powered streamliner ran 313mph at Bonneville on MS, and I doubt that that record hasn't been improved upon.

That's one sick speed in a busa !
I well aware that this is not the fastest outright, but it seems that it's the fastest 1/4mile car so far anyway. (Wasn't even sure about that so that's why there's the questionmark in the subject). Let's see how things go next season !

Not really much Busa to it really. It was a 4 wheeled streamliner that was powered by a warmed over and turbocharged 'busa engine. Looks like on thier website they say it's done over 350mph!

Hi paw, I do remember a blown BBC,methanol dragster running 7's using MS, that was back in the Yahoo message board days. His name is Dave and user id was imakehp but have not heard from him since 2005.The fastest truck is Parish and his 4X4 Chevy,he runs 10.0x (don't think he got his 9 yet) and the fastest 4 cylinder is the Huber Mustang, it's running 8.5-8.7 (somewhere around there). This is only from memory so don't be surprised if I'm off abit.

After last season's supercharger destruction (on the final run the Vortech bearings failed and destroyed the supercharger) things are finally looking better.
Sorted out the fuel pressure / charging issues and other misc stuff and the Vortech has been DIY rebuilt, using parts from another supercharger and the impeller is from a huge turbo.

Did some fuelmap tuning on a dyno, here's a clip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeIZS3x9UHg
Dynoed only to about 0.8bar / 6200rpm , we had to constantly check the supercharger clearances just to be safe. About 950HP @ engine.
We still have to go quite a bit leaner on the A/F ratio.

Here's a clip from last week's finals. Had some problems with a broken rocker, spark and chassis settings.

The in-car camera did work, but it ran out of batteries just before the burnout! s*** happens.

Air to air intercooler added, along with a mechanical fuel pump. Had to add an electric FP in parallel with the mech, since the mech didn't flow during cranking. So the electric is only used for starting.

Here's a first start with the new stuff : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZh5nwcOlwk

Nice!

Would be good to see the ET/kph and some more specs listed in the descriptions of the videos as well. (Promote the Megasquirt !!)

Thanks for sharing.

Okay, that's just awesome.

First, it's a station wagon.
Second, that cage is simply a work of art.
Third, the blower is wicked looking.

I am seriously impressed.

After a LOOONG time of silence...At least there's something to report from the 2012 season...

First start with E85 ethanol, new block and moving parts etc etc : www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_CxAnidWO0

Quick visit to the dyno, to get the fuel map in the ballpark : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYiTif4cafo
The dynosession was 2 days before the finals event

Ended up only doing the national finals event, first pass was a new record for the team, 7.754sec / 275.7kmh (171.3MPH)

Rev limiters were set low for that pass, since that was the first pass with the new engine, plus now running with E85 ethanol

Here's a clip from the finals event : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EvgHbEz7Rw

Really nice! I thought quite long that we were the only MS'ers in Finnish serie.
