Track Tuning with MS3 and MLV

I just got back from a weekend at the track helping a customer tune his SCCA road racing GT lite car. We had installed and tuned an MS3 at the beginning of the year but some signifcant changes to the car required some fine tuning. MS3 and Megalogviewer make and incredibly powerful combo for track tuning. It basically went like this.... send the car out on the track with SD logging enabled and a card in the SD slot, run the car for the 20-25 minute session, D/L and convert the logs once the car was back in the paddock. Then I would run the log at 200% and just look for anaomolies in the datafields I was logging. Once this was done I would run VE Analyze, decide whether or not to accept the revised fuel table and then do some minor smoothing before loading the revised msq back into the car. We did this every session during the test day and during pravtice and qualifying once the event started.

The end result was a very good running race car that was over 5 seconds a lap faster than it was with Weber DCOEs. Needless to say my customer was super happy.

Interesting! How did you account for the lambda delay? And could you share some tips on how to decide whether or not to accept the proposed changes from mlv? Or TS' veal for that matter.

I just set the lambda delay in VE Analyze to 1 second and let it be. Once VE Analyze had finished I looked for any obviously out of place numbers in the VE table. The only change I rejected was caused by the wide band going offline for the last 5 minutes of the session. I went back and filtered those last 5 minutes out then reran VE Analyze and accepted.

I'm sure this is a noob question, but how do you run a log through VE analyze? I thought you could only use VE analyze in realtime. This sounds like a very nice tuning method. Thanks for posting.

You are confusing VE analyse which is an MLV feature with VE analyse live which is a TunerStudio feature.

Is it accurate to assume that analyzing a tune with SD data in VE analyze would be better than using VEanalyze live???

Not necessarily. I would say there are pros and cons to each.

From a safety stand point you might be more comfortable, but TS has several safety mechanisms including turning off the "Update Controller" so it still creates recommendations, but doesn't send them until you say so.

In MLV you can give it more data as input all at once.

However, there are still several improvements in TunerStudio's VE Analyze that are little by little being incorporated into MLV.

Also TunerStudio has better insight into your settings making less chance for error and it can correct, then make the next corrections based on the improved values.

Still, I think it most often comes down to personal preference and your own tuning circumstances.

For us it was a safety issue and the fact that a stiffly suspended race car running on the Sebring 12 Hour Course can kill a laptop in one session.
