We have seen some USB to DB9 adapters that do work and some that don't. I would recommend this one:

Haven't seen any issues out of this adapter. Although do make sure to plug the adapter directly to your tuning PC and run the serial cable from the MS to it.
We have had some noise interference issues when used the other way around.

The USB-serial cable I use came from Maplin. It is based on the Prolific chipset and works for me on Windows XP and Linux.

I'd recommend one based on an FTDI chipset - I've had the most luck with one of those.

While there are many USB-serial cable manufacturers, there aren't nearly as many USB-serial chip manufacturers. FTDI and Prolific are two of the most common chip manufacturers, so most cables use either an FTDI or Prolific chip. For instance, the cables we sell use the Prolific chip. IOGEAR cables also use the Prolific chip, whereas Sabrent cables use the FTDI chip. This information should be available from the cable manufacturer or vendor.
