Ford 302 Crank Position Sensor

Post by klakin »

302 crank position.jpg
I just got a new blueprint 302 crate motor and it has this holder for a crank position sensor built into the timing cover. Does anyone know what sensor fits this?

I picked up a 2000 explorer harmonic balancer that has a crank wheel in the perfect position, but the 2000 explorer crank sensor is completely different and will not fit this cover.

I plan to keep using my dual sync for now, but want to upgrade in the future.

I imagine you've got a truck timing cover, but I can only find mod motor sensors that mount like that, weird.

I was not looking back far enough. I found that the sensor is from a 78-80 Lincoln Versailles. Standard Motor Products PC1. It looks like a hall sensor not VR so that is good. I will check out how it works with the 2000 explorer crank wheel and report back.

To use the Explorer timing wheel with the Explorer VR sensor, as you've already found, you pretty much need the Explorer timing cover. That, in turn, requires a different (reverse rotation) water pump, which sits closer to the front of the engine and may require you to remove the sheetmetal timing indicator wing from the front of the cam. That can be a good thing (it was for me) but isn't always a viable option.
Also, make sure the Explorer balancer has the right weight for your engine, Ford used two different weights on the 302.

You might look in to making your own mount for a cherry hall sensor. DIY Autotune has the hall sensor along with your regular electrical suppliers like Mouser. You'd also need to machine 1/8" off the front of the balancer if you mount the wheel behind the crank pulley.

Or just try what you have and see how it works, if you shield it up well you might have no issues.

I was wrong about the 78 LIncoln crank position sensor as being a hall sensor. It is a VR type. The third wire is a shield ground. I agree the Explorer cover and sensor are the ticket. Next summer I plan to get the AC system going, I will do the serpentine system at that time.
For now I am timing off the dual sync, not ideal, but it works...
