Wasted Spark and LS Coils for Dummies

Post by Bzltyr »

I have an MS2 Extra V3.57 that I used previously on an Oldsmobile V8 with an HEI7. I am now converting it to a Wasted Spark set up with LS truck coils. I need to know what I need to put back to factory and what I need to add for the WS.

36-1 Trigger Wheel with VR Sensor – Pots R52 and R56 are 7 turns counterclockwise 5.2.2 pg. 61

Four Wire IACV – my board has the jumpers discussed on 13.4 pg. 184 of the manual.
I will be removing the CANH and CANL as I need SPR4 to drive a coil.

Accel 140040 LS Truck coils with heat sink on top
V8 Buick
LS high-impedance injectors

My questions are in RED.

Internal jumpers: 5.3 pg. 74 and top of 75.
Spark A to Right of R26 to Pin 7 on the CPU
Spark B to Bottom of R29 to Pin 8 on the CPU
Spark C to Bottom of R27 to Pin 9 on the CPU.

Do the above need any kind of resistor?

Spark D JS11 to Pin 18 on the CPU.
Does Spark D need anything between JS11 and Pin 18 on the CPU?

Pads 1 through 3 are available and to jumper to Output Pins of my choice.
Pad 1 to SPR1 – Pin 3 on DB37
Pad 2 to SPR2 – Pin 4 on DB37
Pad 3 to SPR3 – Pin 5 on DB37

JS11 to SPR4 – Pin 6 on DB37
The JS11 to Spr4 needs the buffer - interface circuit pictured below. Yes?

Emitter #1 to GND proto
Base #2 from MS2
Collector #3 to Spark Output

Capture-2N3904.jpg (6.83 KiB) Viewed 10980 times
Where do I get the 5v - Pins 5 or 20 or 31?
Where do I get the GND proto? – PAD4 or SG? Pg 185
Right near R58 and R26 and the Boot jumper.

My board has no Q16 as it was taken off for HEI7 set up 6.4 pg. 107 - (a). Do I need to put one back?

More to follow. Any input would be appreciated. I am calling this "for dummies" because that is how I feel sometimes. I like things spelled out clearly.
My questions are in RED.

You won't be using these connections directly. You'll be using PAD1, PAD2, PAD3 as below.
Spark D JS11 to Pin 18 on the CPU.
Does Spark D need anything between JS11 and Pin 18 on the CPU?
The are connected already by the circuit board trace.
JS11 to SPR4 – Pin 6 on DB37

Yes, this circuit replicates the existing circuits for PAD1,2,3.

PAD4 = GND
PAD5 = +5V

No.

When using the "resistor method" for ignition outputs, you really must be sure that your coils get power via the fuel pump relay. Otherwise they may spark at power-on. That's why the "FET method" is preferred.

Thank you, James that is good information.

The manual discusses the below:

Spark A to Right of R26 to Pin 7 on the CPU
Spark B to Bottom of R29 to Pin 8 on the CPU
Spark C to Bottom of R27 to Pin 9 on the CPU.
Spark D JS11 to Pin 18 on the CPU.

Is that just for information? Those connections are already done on the board, correct?
The picture below from pg.74 implies there is work to be done.

You seem to say nothing is necessary and that I can just connect Pad 1 to SPR1 etc. except for JS11 which requires the interface.
Am I reading you correctly?
Thanks, again.

I will be removing the CANH and CANL as I need SPR4 to drive a coil.

If I want to use Wasted Spark for a V8 and I need CANH or CAHL for my 4L80e transmission what should I use for to drive the last coil?
Thanks.

I have installed a second connector for the can stuff in the past.

You can use a headpone jack in the end plate for can.
Just like the egt boxes do.

Thanks, Rick.
I will have to investigate that. Is it in the Manuals?

EGT box? Exhaust Gas Temp?

Not in manuals. I used a stereo headphone jack.

I am certain that you are much better than I am at electronics.

Thank you for your help but I have no idea how to hook up an EGT box or a headphone jack.
I am sure it works for you but without explicit instructions I will never be able to use it.

I named this thread for "Dummies" because that is what I am when it comes to electronics.

Thanks anyway.

I still need a little help here.
How can I run LS coils on wasted spark and also use SPR1 for CANH and SPR2 CAHL?

You can't. Use the aux DB15 for spark outputs.

Thanks, Prof. I have heard of this solution but I cannot find any instructions on how to do this in the manual or on the forum board. Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks again.

I am bringing a used MS2 back to life. How do I know if the Pots - R52 and R56 - have been turned the 7 turns anti-clockwise that the manual states is necessary? Also, R56 is supposed to go back clockwise 2 turns.
Are the 7 turns enough to get all the way to the end?
What happens if the pots are not turned?

I need to get Tuner Studio set up for my DB15 spark connections.
I am using Pads 1 to 3 and JS11 to drive my wasted spark.
How do I tell Tuner Studio that I am doing this and that Spark A is not D14?
"Tuner Studio asks for Spark A Output Pin( D14 Preferred)"
Is the setup different with PAD1 Spark A?

Thanks.
