Some Idea for a "street dyno" within TS

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Some Idea for a "street dyno" within TS

Post by pigga »

Hi.
Probably you know those "street dyno" applications, which take a RPM signal of the engine during accelleration run (e.g. as *.wav file recorded from the distributor pickup). It calculates some kind of dyno plot including HP and TQ curves.
Probably this does not give the same accurate results as a "real" dyno, but at least you have a qualitative comparision of your tuning steps to decide if the modicications gave an improvement or not.
I know that there is already a "calculated field" for HP and TQ in TS. Do you think it would be an idea to add a "dyno plot" module to TS? The problem will be that you need a specified part of the log with a straight acelleration run or accell/decell to calculate the transimmion loss. Incorporating a speed sensor signal it would also be possible to take exact 1/4 mile times etc.
Just a spontaneous suggestion....

My street dyno uses more than rpm and speed as the input data. It also needs vehicle weight,
drag coefficient, rolling coefficient, Frontal area etc to make it able to calculate the HP.

All that's needed is an accelerometer. The original G tech calculated 1/4 mile, 0-60, 60-0 and horsepower all based off time, g force, and weight, which you input. So a g-sensor in the proto area, maby a supporting timer circuit and some code and you're golden.

I have typically been looking at this as more of a MegaLogViewer function. It is on the MLV TODO list, near the top for once I get TS out of beta.
The Math is in there now as a calculated field, but I want to make a dedicated graph, include drag in the calculations and improve the smoothing.

It will still be better with a VSS, but using RPM will work too.

MS3 supports a VSS input :)

indeed.. and now has vssdot (acceleration) in mph/sec. I'm just about to go and road test it.

It will be interesting to compare with the accelerometer data from Jean's new board and the comparison between the two could be used for traction control.

Something else that might help with this is conditional dataloging. ie TPS>99%. That way you could set it up so a datalog would only contain the accel run.

I've done this, it's pretty easy. you can get a full setup for $25 or so that outputs an ADC signal straight to MS (nothing else needed, just power and ground). Unfortunately the post was lost in the forum crash. I don't even know if I remember the software side of it now. :(
