Problem connecting after upgrade to ms3 R1.1.2

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Problem connecting after upgrade to ms3 R1.1.2

Post by hobieboy »

Hi,
TS cannot connect to my MS3 after I upgrade the MS3 firmward to R1.1.2.

I can't remember what firmware I was running (the data format string from the firmware upgrade script said 0095) but TS v2.0.5.d was able to connect. After upgrade, following the manual, I created a new project, use Detect to find the MS3. No problem so far and it found the correct port & says data format string is 0238.003

But, it keeps saying "Not Connected".

I started the mini Terminal, type 'Q' and it returns the correct string.

Did I miss something simple? I have attached the TS log file and forgot to mention, I did open the previous tune.

thanks!

Check to see if you have CAN_COMMANDS turned on in the Project Properties on the settings tab.

Yes, indeed it was turned on... I turned it off and now I can connect :)
I am going to install the I/O Extender, so I thought I need to enable CAN_COMMANDS for it to work. Maybe it wasn't the case? What does enabling CAN_COMMANDS go then?

CAN_COMMANDS is actually only needed if you are going to talk to it through something else.

For example when you put in your IOExtender, if you are going to typically connect to it through the MS3, then you will need to enable CAN_COMMANDS for the IOExtender, but not for the MS3.
You would only need to enable CAN commands on the MS3 if you are going to plug the serial cable into something else and connect to the MS3 through that something else.

I've added a description of the Project Properties/Settings to
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms3/tunerstudio_setup.html
and
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms3/firmware.html

Do those look like the best places?

James,
Yes I agree - this makes it very clear what to do to start a new project after upgrade.

One suggestion about Serial Port set up page: It would be useful to start a step 3c for Mac OS... to highlight 2 steps: 1) Install the FTDI driver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
2) Plug into MS3 using USB, 3) Use autodetect port or check that the port (cu.usbserial-A5002ys9)) exist in the /dev directory.
