Shadow DASH (SD)

Post by KenK »

Good Morning Gents:
I am seriously considering getting a Tablet to allow me to log data from my MSII system without using a laptop. The Tablet I am considering is listed below.

10” Tablet
Model: LG Gpad X10.1
LGE Android V6.0 Marshmellow
32 Gig internal storage
128 Gig capable using a SD card

This tablet has a micro USB port as well as a separate charge jack. This could be a plus.
I will connect the Tablet to the MSII through a USB/Serial connection.

I have a couple of questions for you all.

1); The GPS system you refer to: do these tablets actually use a GPS chip set or are they using the phone connection to generate GPS data?? The Tablet description makes no mention of this. My cell phone actually has a real GPS chip set and it works but it consumes a lot of battery energy.

More important
2); Does SD generate log files that are compatible with MegaLogViewer?? Or do I have to down load the files through the internet to get them converted. That would not be a good thing as cell service is often not available.

3); Will MegaLogViewer run on the Tablet??

4); Will SD run on this operating system (Android V6.0 Marshmellow) ?? That would be great

5); Will Tuner Studio run on the Tablet?? That would also be great

Many Tablets do have a GPS chip, some do not. The built in GPS's only run at 1 update/sec, so it will give you speed but not much good for performance data.
You can use an external GPS like a QStarz BT818
2); Does SD generate log files that are compatible with MegaLogViewer?? Or do I have to down load the files through the internet to get them converted. That would not be a good thing as cell service is often not available.
Yes, exactly the same.
3); Will MegaLogViewer run on the Tablet??
No.
4); Will SD run on this operating system (Android V6.0 Marshmellow) ?? That would be great
Yes
5); Will Tuner Studio run on the Tablet?? That would also be great
No.

Ok.
Background: I know know Absolutely NOTHING about Tablets

Now I have an LGE Tablet that is running the Marshmallow operating system. I did manage to figure out how to add a folder to the Download directory and downloaded the install file for Shadow Dash into it.

When I tried to load it of course the Tablet complains about and unknown devise (Expected). The operating system takes you to the Security. No problems so far.

Question, I can't figure out how to or what to change to allow me to install the software.

Next, I know once I get the software running, I know Iam going to want to log some data and download it to my lap top. How do you do that. I tried to connect my lap top to it through the USB port and that did not work and I can't see the Tablet on my network.

Sorry about being so ignorant

In security check "Unknown Sources"
Then it will allow you to side load apps.

You should be able to browse the tablets file system and download files through the USB.
However, you can also set Shadow Dash to upload your log file to Dropbox or shadowtuner.com or email them to yourself.

Found the problem with the loading of the program. The operating system will only let you access the Owner user, not a user.

I got the program loaded and registered now all I have to do is to get it attached to the ECU and then download some data.

I will be connecting to the ECU by USB/RS232 initially until I get the Bluetooth adapter. That is where I am heading.

As for using the internet to transfer data not to handy as I do most of my work in the desert and don't often have internet access and when I do, data transfer can be REEEAAALLL slow.

Thanks for your help. I suspect I will need more

Another Question for you.

In your video, you say that I can load "DASH" files into the tablet to get the DASH I want to see. Currently, all I have are the default dash which is not much help to me.

Do I have to get the tablet connected to the ECU to get the DAHS files loaded? At this point, I cannot do this as I have not yet gotten the cable to allow it. I have ordered the Blue tooth adapter from you folks.

I tried to copy a "DASH" file from tunerstudio and the Android will not let me copy files to it. I can copy file from the tablet to a Windows PC. Looks like a permissive issue with the tablet

Yes, you have to connect to your ECU so it can find out what firmware you have and load / generate the appropriate dashboards for your firmware.
Initially there is just the 1st screen with accelerometer and GPS data. The other 3 dashboards are blank until you connect to your MegaSquirt.

Thanks for your input.

I'll just have to wait for the Blue Tooth converter to show up. I am really looking forward to using Shadow Dash.

I assume you have those in stock

Thanks again for your help

Phil:
I received the Blue Tooth adapter yesterday Thanks.

I was able to get the SD software running on my Android tablet using the Blue tooth adapter. I was also able to get Tuner Studio running on the Blue Tooth adapter as well. In playing with the SD software, I did come up with some questions for you.

1). As a general rule, I like the gauges provided in the Tuner Studio software. I set them up as I like them and they worked fine except that it doesn't look like I can save the dashboard. Every time I shutdown and reload the SD, the SD program goes back to the default set of gauges. I was able to get the green screen to work and save the settings as I wanted them. Am I missing something??

2) I am planning on making some long run data logs. In working with the data logs on a short term basis, I found that the logs tend to run about 330kb per minute assuming 12 data points per minute (average). If I were to let the log run for say an hour, the log would be some 20mb and about 45,000 data points. How is the Android tablet going to handle this and what about Megalogger?? Do either of these two software systems have limits and what are they??

3) I do like the SD green dash board. I have not tried to use the screen outside in the bright sun so green may not be the best color. Can the color be changed?? I did notice that the software package uses an INI file but have not looked at the file to see how it works.

Thanks for your help and a great set of products.

Dash 1-3 should save any gauges you have selected when you exit. Dash 4 does not save the set gauges, it generates the dash from the ini each time. The next release does save the selected gauges.

A data log of that size shouldn't be a problem on either end.

You can edit Dash 1-3 to be anything you want using TunerStudio.
http://www.tunerstudio.com/index.php/ma ... ow-dash-ms

However, we are currently in a bit of an awkward stage... You need to use TunerStudio 2.6 to edit the dashboards, the current release of SD doesn't support TS 3 dashboards yet.. This will be remedied soon.

Phil:
Yesterday I set the system up and ran a log for a little more than an hour. The resulting file contained 50,000 plus records and was a little over 20 meg in size.

Neither the tablet nor Mega logger had a problem with it.

I worked some with the dashes, I found that I could set the Green dash up to my liking. I like it and it will be the one I use from this point forward. As for use outside in the bright sun, if I run the tablet screen full bright it can be seen. Not the best thing to do to the tablet but it will work for my needs.

I am powering the Blue tooth converter from the MS2 ECU. I assume this is OK. It seems to work fine. I also permanently installed the Blue Tooth converter in the car.

I saw that on the web site that a Beta version of SD was released. This version will allow us to access the VE tables. How is that coming??

Good Morning Gents:
I'm still learning about Tablets. I currently have an LGE 10" tablet. It works fine but it uses the cell service to generate GPS data and this is not acceptable. What devises are out there that can be linked to the tablet via Blue Tooth that don't uses a cell service and won't break the bank??

Also, what tablets incorporate a GPS chip set in them. Most advertisements I have seen if they mention GPS at all they don't tell you how the data is being generated??

Most tablets have a GPS sensor. You can tell for certain by checking the Sensors section of the details or specifications on the device. If GPS is listed as a sensor, then it will not require phone service to get a location fix. It will also be a much more accurate location fix.

I'm having trouble getting Dropbox sync working. I selected the option in shadow dash which directed me to chrome where I allowed access. I still don't have my log files appearing there.

Will Shadow dash sync logs that didn't get uploaded?
