Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
So I've jumpered R10 now as well, and I have RPM signal again and the car runs, but it is still a similar condition as before.
I have attached a datalog!! Thanks in advance.

Anyone?? I posted a datalog thinking id help a bunch and now i just hear crickets haha
Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
I was thinking could i just run a MSD 6AL and run the tach output from the MSD for my rpm signal? Or eould there be more to it.slideways wrote:Anyone?? I posted a datalog thinking id help a bunch and now i just hear crickets haha

It would have to be a big improvement to get away from that coil flyback triggering.

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
I understand that, but it should work as is... there are plenty of cars running coil triggering
Coil Negative RPM Triggering - RPM Signal Drops Out *DATALOG
MS1 2.2 pre built from DIY.
Running fuel only
Toyota 4AG 16v w factory locked distributor
I flipped D5, jumped D8, jumped R10, and ran a 1k ohm 1/4 watt resistor from D8 to the banded side of D13. These instructions were given to me to supposedly help with a cleaner rpm signal.
I have the white wire from the MS harness for coil - going to the coil, and the car starts and runs but the rpm signal almost seems to drop out for a split second at times, you can see it in the attached datalog. Please i need this car running!! I can taste it I AM SO CLOSEEEE!!!

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
Often on 4AGE's triggered off the coil negative we've kept adding more and more resistance to the input. I can't check the build docs now but...
In the build instructions it mentions an "input resistor" which I think is R10. Increase the resistance of that guy.
If you have too much resistance, the rpm signal will drop out, but adding resistance definitely helps reduce the noise.
Long term aim to get a dual VR board from jbperf.

Re: Coil Negative RPM Triggering - RPM Signal Drops Out *DAT
So what is driving the coil at the moment? Does the car miss when these drops occur? Do you have access to an oscilloscope?

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
R10 is the input rpm resistor or atleast tgats what i thought when i saw the size of the resistor at r10... it looks to be dropping out to me? So less resistance? Thanks man stugg like this keeps me goin
Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
what if i installed a potentiometer inline and adjusted until i have a consistant rpm signal? Seems like it would work in theory..slideways wrote:R10 is the input rpm resistor or atleast tgats what i thought when i saw the size of the resistor at r10... it looks to be dropping out to me? You jumpered it??slideways wrote:So I've jumpered R10 now as well, and I have RPM signal again and the car runs, but it is still a similar condition as before.

Have you looked at the circuit to see what that would do? NOT a good idea.

I thought the same thing as well, but i added the 1k ohm resistor so i thought maybe that took its job, what resistance is the r10 resistor?jsmcortina wrote:You jumpered it??slideways wrote:So I've jumpered R10 now as well, and I have RPM signal again and the car runs, but it is still a similar condition as before.

4pin bosch ignitor with an old oil filled bosch coil, i wish i had an oscilloscope! :/ the car doesnt seem to lose spark but it does stumble when the rpm drops occur, which i figure is due to a lack of fuelslow_hemi6 wrote:So what is driving the coil at the moment? Re: Coil Negative RPM Triggering - RPM Signal Drops Out *DAT
Would you consider using the 4 pin to trigger the MS and use a simple BIP373 with a mica insulator?

Unless I've missed a page, he is NOT using the standard V2.2 opto circuit. R10 is neither needed nor desired.

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
It's based on the Matt_GSXR circuit normally used with the cased uS. The outwards-facing diode blocks the various spikes and ringing-on pulses, while the pull-up resistor gives a clean, solid signal to the Opto. When Slideways complained that the mods I had described made matters worse, I did a quick check and found that the R10 formed a voltage divider with the pull-up resistor, leaving a weak and ineffective signal at the Opto. Jumping R10 out solved THAT particular problem, but I will concede that he seems to be no further ahead than with the original circuit.
Mods to the V2.2 Opto circuit are as follows:

- D5 - reversed
R10 - jumped
D8 - jumped

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
Yup thats how i currently have it, with a 1k ohm 1/4wt resistor doing from d8 to d13 banded side.
Has anyone looked at the datalog? It looks like its just dropping out and not noisy.. right?? So should i lower the resistance in the resistor i added??

Re: ae71 4age corolla on MS122-C fuel only coil neg rpm nois
Checking with a variable resistance between D8 and the opto only works with the standard V2.2 opto circuit. Since you modified your board to my suggestion, all you're doing is weakening the feed to the opto until it stops working. As you noted, the RPM signal simply drops out.

Re: Coil Negative RPM Triggering - RPM Signal Drops Out *DAT
I feel like im really close with the current setup.. it just has the rpm signal dropping out, i heard this could be because the resistance is too high?? How does anyone feel about that
